Lake Arrowhead: California's Alps

The 2006 Winter Olympics have riveted Americans with the awesome vistas of the Italian Alps.
If you're one of the many people who have added the Alps to their list of destinations to visit someday, take heart.
There are places closer to home that offer those same stunning vistas.
One such place, in fact, is a short drive from Los Angeles, in San Bernardino county: Lake Arrowhead, California.

Lake Arrowhead has been called
"California's Alps."
While the people of this community have all of Southern California's famous warmth, the mountains, the pine trees, and the climate are totally alpine.
Snowy but mild winters make for some of the West Coast's best skiing.

In the summer, Southern Californians escape here to swim or canoe in the lake and breathe in the mountain valley's cool, clean air.

Lake Tahoe

The discovery of Lake Tahoe in 1844 was an accidental one. John C. Fremont was searching for the Buenaventura River. From what was probably Red Lake Peak, Fremont moved his eyes towards the west, and noticed a singled-out pass. In the excitement of finding a way through the threatening heights, Fremont forgot to name the gorgeous lake he had just discovered.

After achieving his goal, he did rectify his error and called the lake ?Lake Bonpland' after a French explorer. The lake, however, was never referred to by this name; indeed, for some reason it was called ?Lake Bigler'. This continued until 1862 when an admirer of the basin, William Henry Knight, decided to call it ?Lake Tahoe'.

Development of Lake Tahoe actually began only in the 1950s. Roads going towards the basin began to be plowed every year, thereby making way for a permanent residence.

And in the Winter Olympics of 1960 at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe was finally put on the map as a famous skiing center...

The Benefits of Lake Tahoe Cabin Rentals

Lake Tahoe cabin complexes rangein size from small, six-unit, luxury rentals in the woods, to larger cabins with common pools and private beaches. There is something here for everyone.

Some folks come to the lake with half a dozen fishing, drinking and gambling buddies. All they want is a roof over their heads and the basic amenities so they can have fun for a few days. Groups who come together to ski particular mountains will crash on the floor and do it all again the next day.

Some people want privacy for romantic reasons or simply escape from the pressures of city life. All of these needs can be met with a cabin vacation rental available in and around the Lake Tahoe area.

There are cabins, so beautiful, so big and well designed that they are really no longer cabins, but rather, woodsy mansions around the lake. And there are cabins so small that they are almost filled completely by the bed and bathroom they contain. You can find it all by researching...

In a state already known for conservation and back-to-nature vacations, Lake Champlain is the secret destination for a growing number of New England vacationers.

Here's my pick of five destinations and attractions in the Lake Champlain region when you visit...

ISLAND HOPING VERMONT STYLE:
